Promoting STEM

This term we were pleased to host a number of Science workshops for year 6 students from local primary schools. We are passionate about promoting STEM in girls; it was noted in our most recent Ofsted report that a high proportion of our students (above the national average) go on to study STEM at university.

Along with student helpers from year 10 and year 11, we ran a DNA EXTRACTION workshop. For the year 6’s who attended it was their first experience in a Science laboratory and they were very enthusiastic. The students were able to extract the DNA from a strawberry or kiwi and take it home in a small glass vial.

Next, we spoke about GEODES and how they are formed from volcanoes. Students were then able to crack open some real geodes and see the crystals that had formed inside.

Our students ended with giving the guests a quiz on some of the things they had learnt, chocolates were handed out for all the right answers! Before they left, we gave all of our guests a goodie bag with some ideas of science experiments they could do at home.

We really enjoyed hosting the year 6’s and I hope they went home feeling excited and enthusiastic about Science. If you would like your class to participate, contact us. We will see what we can do!
